Who is Tara?

Tara King is the biggest and jazziest third of Mad King Thomas.  She has studied dance and performance since 1988, when her mother put her in a jazz class against her will.  For many years she happily performed jazz, ballet, tap, gymnastics and modern dance with a studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Later in adolescence, she shifted focus to contemporary choreography and performance quality, and began making and performing her own dances at 16. She graduated from Macalester College in 2005 with a degree in Anthropology (with a minor in Creative Writing), and spent much of her time at Macalester working with the dance department as choreographer, dancer, organizer and stage manager.  She co-founded Mad King Thomas with Monica Thomas and Theresa Madaus in 2004.  Tara has studied under and/or worked with Peggy Shaw (of Split Britches), Laurie Carlos, Emily Johnson (of Catalyst Dance), Julyen Hamilton, Hijack, Judith Howard, Molly Van Avery, Mark Yonally (of Chicago Tap Theater), Anna Shogren, Galen Treuer, and many others.  Tara's personal choreographic interests include the influence of text on movement (and vice versa).
